What Were They Thinking???

Now that most of the drywall has been removed, I would like to show odd construction methods that leave me wondering WHY????

As mentioned earlier, this was a one room house that was the ranch house for much of the surrounding area and has been added on to several times by numerous people who had no idea what they were doing. They were probably pretty lazy too. We have found in numerous places were the original exterior siding was left on and drywall installed over it. Some times the siding is 12 inch wide boards, rare now days, or tongue and grove pine.   Normally people remove the exterior siding back to the framing. Then additional wiring or plumbing can be added easily before covering with drywall for a finished interior wall.

At this house, however,  a new wall was just added next to the old one. See photo.

What was really odd though was to find an old roof with 11 layers of shingles in the attic space. The people we bought the house from put an addition on that added a new roof line above this.  Why they did not remove the old roofing and rafters?  Who knows.

Instead of removing the siding on the old wall a new wall was built next to the old one with a gap in between.  Why?  How did this pass inspection?
